The last few months have been so busy. My family moved from Richmond, VA to Lexington, KY. No small feat for a family of 6! We started new jobs, new schools and of course we moved horses. Needless to say I haven’t had a whole lot of extra time to blog. It seems like so much has happened where to start was always the questing. So here goes….

Saltira has been making such wonderful progress. She is really learning to sit and collect, lateral work has been really good and we were thinking about canter pirouettes. You could never fault her for not trying. That’s just one of the many things I love about her. So when she seemed just a little not right first thought was, it’s muscle soreness from all the hard work.

Unfortunately it didn’t get better. So the vet was called and checked her out. It seemed minor, she was just a little sore up front. Most likely from recently getting her feet done by a different farrier and the angles were off. So we fixed that but she still just wasn’t 100%

So off we go to Rood and Riddle. It’s times like this that I’m so thankful I have her insured. After flexions, x-ray, ultrasound and ultimately an MRI for the diagnosis she had a small tendon injury in the left front. I was very thankful it wasn’t a huge injury but hearing that she would need months off and then slow rehab back to work… well there go my plans for next year. Such is life with horse!

This occurred back at the end of November or beginning of December. Last Thursday we went back to Rood and Riddle for her recheck. It probably seems silly but I was really nervous for this check-up. What if she isn’t better? What if she’s worse? What if what if what if…. I almost didn’t want to be there but of course I was taking her. She’s my girl.

Saltira is a horse that loves attention and loves having a job. Maybe it’s just for the treats but honestly she hasn’t seemed very happy being out of work. When I take Belle instead of her I swear Saltira seems like she’s sad. So when I led her to the trailer she practically jumped on.
The jog for the lameness exam went well. Despite being off work for the last 2 months she trotted off like a princess, perfectly well behaved and thankfully totally sound. Also thankfully no sensitivity on palpation of the tendon. Next came the ultrasound. She stood there seeming to totally enjoy being the center of attention. Ears sideways and interested in everything but stood completely still for the exam. More good news the tendon looks completely normal on exam.

We are cleared to start tack walking. Yep super exciting! Fifteen minutes of just walking, nothing fancy or super fun but I’m incredibly happy to be back in the saddle again. Today was her first day back to “work” and I was so thankful to be sitting on Saltira again. Anyone who has rehabbed a fit sport horse knows that tack walking can be well shall we say exciting. As you can imagine Saltira handled it like everything else, like a princess. She is happy to be back to work and earning her cookies.
